Retinol for beginners: how to use it without damaging your skin
(guide by age and skin type)
Retinol is the star ingredient in anti-aging, and also the most feared.
You’ve probably heard things like:
• “I peeled horribly with retinol”
• “My face turned as red as a lobster”
• “I tried it once and never again”
The truth is, the problem isn’t retinol itself.
The problem is how it’s used:
without preparation, without protecting the skin barrier, and without respecting the recommended frequency.
In this guide, I’ll explain, as an esthetician, how to use retinol:
• without damaging your skin,
• adapted to your age,
• and respecting your phototype (skin tone).
⚠️ Important: This guide is for educational purposes only. If you have new spots, spots that change shape or color, or severe melasma, you should always be evaluated by a dermatologist.
What is retinol and why is everyone talking about it?
Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A. It works by “training” the skin to:
• renew cells more effectively,
• smooth fine lines and improve texture,
• minimize the appearance of pores,
• support long-term collagen production,
• help with mild hyperpigmentation and acne marks.
That’s why it’s everywhere:
creams, serums, eye creams, even neck products.
The problem: if used too strongly, too quickly, or on a weakened skin barrier, it can cause:
• redness,
• extreme dryness,
• unsightly flaking,
• sensitivity to everything.
The key isn’t to “endure the pain,” but to use it wisely.
Are you a candidate for using retinol?
In general, cosmetic retinol is considered useful if:
• you are over 25–28 years old and want preventative care,
• you already see fine lines, dull skin, and more visible pores,
• you have mild blemishes/post-acne marks and want overall improvement.
Extra caution is advised if:
• you are pregnant or breastfeeding → only use what your doctor approves; many guidelines recommend avoiding retinoids during pregnancy.
• you have active rosacea or severe dermatitis → first stabilize your skin with a dermatologist.
The 5 Golden Rules of Retinol for Beginners
1. Less is more (start gently)
There’s no need to start with the strongest retinol from the pharmacy.
A gentle product used correctly is better than an aggressive one used for a couple of nights that then causes trauma.
2. Introduce retinol on top of a strong barrier
Before considering retinol, check:
• Is your skin very dry?
• Is it irritated, breaking out, or peeling?
If yes → start with hydration, ceramides, and a gentle niacinamide.
3. Gradual frequency
• Weeks 1–2: 1 night a week.
• Weeks 3–4: 2 nights a week (not consecutive).
• Then: increase to 3 nights depending on tolerance. You don’t have to use it every night to see results.
4. Apply using the “sandwich” method (protective layers)
• Light moisturizer
• Retinol
• Another layer of moisturizer on top. This reduces irritation, especially if you have a high or very sensitive skin type.
5. Use sunscreen religiously during the day. Retinol can make your skin more vulnerable to the sun. Without SPF, you’re wasting your money.
Adapt the retinol according to your phototype (very important if you are Latina or have dark skin)
Skin Types I–III (very fair to medium skin)
• They burn more easily and redden readily.
• They generally tolerate AHAs and retinol better than darker skin types… but rosacea and sensitivity are the main factors.
Tips:
• Introduce retinol along with rich moisturizers.
• If you are prone to rosacea, use it on selected areas (forehead, upper cheeks) and avoid active flare-ups.
Skin Types IV–VI (Latin, brown, and black skin)
Here’s the trick:
These skin types are less visibly irritated, but when they are…
dark spots appear (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).
Tips:
• Always use the “sandwich” method: moisturizer → retinol → moisturizer.
• Start with lower concentrations and no more than once a week at first. • Avoid using retinol the same night as harsh exfoliants (high AHAs, at-home peels).
• Focus on: daily hydration + sun protection.
Key message:
“Your brown skin doesn’t need to suffer to improve. If you irritate it, what you gain in wrinkles you’ll lose in dark spots.”
Typical routine with retinol (night)
Imagine this basic structure:
1. Gentle cleansing
No physical exfoliants, no tightness.
2. Light moisturizer (pre-layer)
To protect the barrier (this could be a cream with ceramides/glycerin).
3. Small amount of retinol
• A pea-sized amount for the entire face.
• Avoid the eye area, sides of the nose, and corners of the mouth if you have very sensitive skin.
4. More nourishing moisturizer on top
• Cream with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, squalane, etc.
5. Nothing else
• Do not mix this with strong acids, peels, or other harsh products on the same night.
Retinol-free night (skin rest)
• Here you can use:
• Hydrating serum,
• Niacinamide,
• A gentle azelaic acid,
• Soothing/hydrating masks.
Common Mistakes with Retinol
(and What to Do Instead)
❌ Start with the highest dose “because it works faster”
✅ Start gently, increase slowly, and protect your skin barrier.
❌ Use it every day from the first week
✅ One night a week at first is more than enough.
❌ Mix retinol + strong acids + physical exfoliants
✅ Choose: retinol nights or gentle chemical exfoliation nights, not both together.
❌ Don’t use sunscreen “because it’s not sunny today”
✅ Use SPF every day, even if you’re only in front of windows/screens.
How to know if retinol is working for you (without obsessing)
Signs you’re doing well:
• Slight dryness/flaking at first, manageable with moisturizer.
• After a few weeks:
• Smoother texture,
• More even skin tone,
• Fine lines slightly softened.
Signs you’re overdoing it:
• Intense, burning redness.
• Skin that hurts to the touch.
• Crusty flaking.
• Constant itching.
If this happens:
• Stop using retinol for a few days.
• Hydrate thoroughly (ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol).
• Try again later, less frequently or with a gentler product.
What can you do right now?
1. Check your bathroom and see if you already have retinol (and how you’re using it).
2. Choose one night a week as your “retinol night.”
3. Strengthen your moisturizer and sunscreen.
